The Glendale Association for the Retarded

Since its founding in 1954, the Glendale Association for the Retarded has provided services for the developmentally disabled. Today, the Association serves 63 adults with vocational training, job placement, adult living skills instruction, community integration program, recreational activities, and residential placement. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors.

At the Association's GAR Services, we offer clients work opportunities in the areas of mailings, assembly, recycling, collating, and packaging. Additionally clients are integrated into the community by competitive employment placements or by workcrews, working at business sites.

A separate entity, the Glendale Foundation for the Retarded provides the fundraising and financial support necessary to supplement State funding from the Department of Developmental Services. Fundraisers are held annually - Derby Day, Summer in the City and a Bowl-A-Thon.

The Associaton and the Foundation sponsor a number of Special Events and Fundraisers throughout the year.

Our Residential Services provide permanent residential placement to a total of 22 adults whose families can no longer provide care or who wish to live away from their families. In a comfortable, secure, loving atmosphere, residents develop living skills that will help them become productive and independent. We have three group homes - Alma House, David Gogian House and Hamilton House.
