A Day of Horsin’ Around… and Fundraising!
The 23rd Annual Derby Day event, held on May 3, 2014, at Pickwick Banquet Center in Burbank, was another success for The Campbell Center and, with the generosity of our Sponsors and donors, raised $90,000 for our mission. Former Glendale Police Chief Ron DePompa and the Glendale Police Officers’ Association were the recipients of the Campbell Award of Excellence, the organization’s top honor named for Founders Jerry and Phyllis Campbell and bestowed on those whose service and commitment to our mission sets them apart.
On that lovely afternoon, guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, feasted their eyes on a roomful of exciting Silent Auction items, bid their hearts out, loading their cars with their purchases. Adding to the fun was an exquisite array of Live Auction items expertly called by Ardy Kassakhian who, besides his role as Glendale City Clerk. can now include AUCTIONEER EXTRAORDINAIRE as an added skills set on his already-impressive resume.
The extra special touch this year was the presence of super singer/songwriter Bill Withers. The artist of such memorable songs as “Lean On Me,” “Just The Two Of Us,” “Ain’t No Sunshine When You’re Gone,” among so many, many others, was there with his lovely wife Marcia. The couple graciously donated a lunch date with them to be included in the Live Auction. The afternoon ended with the live streaming of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs, always a featured attraction at The Campbell Center Derby Day events.
Special gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the event with the purchase of tables, tickets, ads, sponsorships, auction items or donations, be it monetary or in-kind. Noteworthy are our key Sponsors including, Disney, Melby & Anderson, Jerry and Phyllis Campbell, Glendale Police Officers’ Association, Jose and Monica Sierra, United Brotherhood of Carpenters, and theTrebek Family Foundation.
